Spaceport design contract awarded

Highlands and Islands Enterprise has appointed architectural firm NORR Consultants to lead the production of designs for a proposed satellite launch facility at the Moine, between Durness and Tongue.

Sub-contractors Arup Engineering and ERZ landscape architects will work with NORR to produce designs for a planning application to be submitted this summer. Subject to consent, construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2020.

In the 1980s, Ove Arup and Partners — an earlier incarnation of Arup Engineering — acted as consulting engineers for the design of the Kylesku Bridge. NORR Architects is a multinational company with offices in Inverness, Aberdeen and Glasgow.

Highland Enterprise says that the design contract covers architectural services, mechanical and electrical engineering, civil engineering and a landscape architect. The team will be responsible for obtaining all necessary consents to enable construction to begin in 2020.

They will also be responsible for various surveys on site. These will embrace practical matters such as drainage, archaeology, traffic, visual impact, air quality and acoustics.

According to Highland Enterprise, “the flora, fauna and scenery behind the natural significance of the area will need to be taken into account as part of the spaceport’s design and construction.”

A preferred bidder for the commercial operation of the site is expected to be announced in the next few months.
